Day 14 - 16/02/20

Dear Friends,

In the last couple of days we have had our first experience at an Indian Cinema. We went with Sue to the Metro INOX Cinema to see Chhapaak which was entirely in Hindi. It was based around a girl, who had rejected a man, who in return grew jealous and decided that if he couldn't have her, then no one could. She had acid thrown in her face, and was permanently scarred. It was a really powerful story of her journey to come to terms with this upheaval, the court battles, and also her coming together with other victims to form a support group. It all seemed like it was turning into a happy ending when she found love. However, the last scene shocked us all as it showed a bride getting ready on her special day and as she is walking out, she is attacked with acid. We all felt unusually effected by the film. I really enjoyed the experience and it reminded me of the last time I visited an Indian cinema complex with my family and we lost Jake but eventually found him on the CCTV, after he had wondered into a screening and started helping himself to somebody else's popcorn! I have also been on 3 runs consecutively, but did not quite manage it this morning. I have a guilty confession - on run two I got 3km in and then was feeling a little bit ropey so had to get a taxi back.. hopefully that won't happen on Sunday. I also got my bib today which came with some odd extras like a cotton rucksack and red bandana - think I will be a bit hot to wear those on the day.

Yesterday, we visited Ali who volunteers for OSCAR and teaches some of the OSCAR staff. She lives in Powai, so we all got the train together after leaving the office in the afternoon, and then took a rickshaw, our first one because they are banned in south Mumbai, to her office. There were four of us which apparently is not allowed, it seems, as part way through the journey we got pulled over by a policeman. There was a lot of bartering and eventually we carried on our way without any real consequences it seems..

Ali's apartment was on the 23rd floor and we saw our first sunset in Mumbai from her balcony; it was beautiful. We also visited a Mariott Hotel that her husband was the GM for and joined in on the staff party as it was a kite festival. Tinks and I failed to get ours to fly but the two Toms had a pretty good go at it although it did end up getting caught in a tree and chased by an eagle. We also tried our first Chaat and it won't be our last! The hotel was huge with 800 rooms and 1,000 staff we got a full tour and the view from the top was stunning.

Ali cooked us a lovely meal of pulled pork and pork meatballs with coleslaw and mash-potato. It was a taste of home and one of my first breaks from eating only vegetarian food. I am going with Tinks and Raghu to visit my case studies home today which I am excited about. I am also pushing to go to Bandra this evening but we will see.

bye for now,
Phoebe
